Women's Mental Health Q & A

What is women’s mental health care?

Women’s mental health care at Broderick Healthcare consists of mental health evaluations that help diagnose concerns specific to women and treatments that restore optimal mental health. Kathleen diagnoses such conditions and tailors treatments based on your unique situation to help you thrive in relationships, at work, in school, or when completing everyday tasks.

Which mental health concerns might women face?

Examples of mental health disorders women may face during their lifetime include:

  • Depression
  • Postpartum depression
  • Menopause-related mental health challenges
  • Anxiety disorders
  • Grief
  • Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
  • Eating disorders
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)
  • Substance use disorder

It’s common to experience more than one mental health disorder at the same time or more than one condition throughout your lifetime. Some are situational, based on life events or experiences, while others are related to genetics and brain changes.

What are the risk factors for women’s mental health disorders?

The cause isn’t always clear, but risk factors for developing women’s mental health concerns include:

  • Family history of mental health disorders
  • Hormone changes linked to menopause or having a baby
  • Ongoing or extreme stress
  • Trauma
  • Loss of a loved one
  • Job loss
  • Divorce
  • Brain chemistry changes
  • Unhealthy lifestyle habits
  • Chronic pain
  • Chronic diseases
  • Terminal illnesses
  • Substance misuse

Adopting healthy habits lessens the risk of physical and mental health conditions, but you can’t always avoid them without treatment. See Kathleen at the first sign of a problem.

How are women’s mental health conditions diagnosed?

Kathleen completes a mental health evaluation by asking questions about your moods, emotions, thoughts, and behaviors. She also discusses your medical history, medications, and lifestyle habits, completes a physical exam, and may order blood work or other diagnostic tests.

How are women’s mental health disorders treated?

Treating anxiety, depression, grief, and similar concerns may involve making healthy lifestyle modifications, taking medications, receiving vitamin injections, or undergoing cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), or other forms of psychotherapy — and taking part in support groups when appropriate.

Kathleen can also help you manage any physical health problems. She follows up to ensure a successful outcome.
